Mouthguard

Mouthguard

Are you a sports fan, but concerned about the impact your favorite activity might have on your teeth? At Dentistes Outremont, we have a solution: a custom-made mouthguard for optimum protection!

Why wear a mouthguard?

As we all know, sport is essential for good health, but any kind of activity carries the risk of injury. This is particularly true of activities where there's a chance of falling or being hit, such as combat sports, baseball, soccer, basketball, field hockey, soccer, skateboarding, skiing or snowboarding, roller derby, mountain biking, and many others.
Risks to your mouth include:
  • Tooth loss;
  • Fracture of teeth or jaw;
  • Injury to the soft tissues of the mouth;
  • Injury to the tongue.

A mouthguard offers you protection against all these inconveniences. Playing your favorite sport shouldn't put your smile at risk!

Off-the-shelf or custom-made mouthguard?

There are many commercially available mouthguards, but they don't fit your teeth perfectly, so they can move or get in the way, which doesn't offer the best protection. For an optimal fit, our professionals at Dentistes Outremont recommend a custom-made mouthguard. It offers many advantages:
  • Molded from your dental impressions, it adapts perfectly to your teeth;
  • The fit keeps it firmly in place in your mouth;
  • Lasts longer than commercial products;
  • Comfortable, so it doesn't interfere with your speech or breathing.
You should also be aware that there are different types of protectors to suit different sporting activities. Your dentist will be able to advise you on the best model for you!

How will my custom mouthguard be made?

1.
First, your dentist will perform a thorough examination to check the condition of your teeth and, if necessary, correct any problems beforehand (for example, if you have an untreated cavity).

2.

The impression of your teeth is then taken using our 3D technology, which offers greater precision and comfort than taking impressions with molds and paste!

3.

Your impressions are sent to the laboratory where your mouthguard is made. The mouthguard is molded in a highly resistant plastic that can be adapted to suit certain criteria; for example, you can opt for a brightly colored plastic, so that your mouthguard is more easily visible in the rare event that you lose it.

4.

Your protector is then delivered directly to your home or to our clinic, in a specially adapted box.

Please note that mouthguards should be changed every year, to maintain their effectiveness in the face of wear and tear caused by sporting activities. This is even more important in the case of children and teenagers, so that the protector adapts to the growth of their dentition!

Recent studies have shown that custom-made mouthguards can even provide protection against concussion. Don't hesitate to make an appointment to take advantage of our team's advice. Our dental professionals will ensure a perfect fit, so you can enjoy your sporting activities in complete safety!
